Privacy & FERPA
Boomerang Projects is built for AP® Seminar teachers and students. This page describes our intended data practices in plain language. It is not a legal contract. The controlling document for a school is the signed service agreement.
On this page
What we collect
- Teachers: name + email (used only to sign in and own your classes).
- Students: first name, last initial, and the class code you joined with. No email. No last name. No password.
- Student work: the text and metadata you save in deliverables (IRR, IWA, TMP, annotated bibliographies, research journal, notecards, etc.).
- Teacher feedback and rubric scores recorded on student work.
- Operational data: minimal session and error logs to keep the app working. No third-party analytics, no behavioral trackers, no advertising IDs.
How we use it
- To show you your classes, deliverables, feedback, and scores.
- To let teachers manage rosters, leave feedback, and score student work against rubrics aligned to the AP® Seminar Course and Exam Description.
- To export your own data as CSV when you ask for it.
- To detect and prevent abuse of the service.
What we do not do
- We do not sell student or teacher data.
- We do not share data with third parties for advertising.
- We do not show third-party trackers or behavioral ads on student-facing pages.
- We do not require students to give us an email address or a last name.
AI & student work
Boomerang Projects does not use student writing to train AI models. We do not feed your drafts, notecards, journal entries, or feedback into an external model for training.
When the app uses AI to help a teacher (for example, summarizing the state of a team's discussion in the Team Health panel), it is done with the minimum information needed and is never used to make a high-stakes decision on its own. AP® Seminar rubric scoring is teacher-driven, not AI-driven. The rubric language students see in Boomerang Projects is an original-voice paraphrase written by an experienced AP Seminar teacher and aligned to the current College Board rubric \u2014 not the College Board text itself. We link students to the official rubric on AP Central for the authoritative wording.
FERPA & COPPA posture
Boomerang Projects is designed to fit within the school-official framework FERPA describes. This is a design posture, not a certification.
- Under FERPA, schools are the data controllers for student education records. Where a school or district signs our service agreement, Boomerang Projects is intended to operate as a school official with a legitimate educational interest, subject to the terms of that agreement.
- We aim to follow COPPA-style minimums even for students 13 and older: collect only what is needed for the assignment, no behavioral profiling, and parent/guardian-aware language. We are not COPPA-certified.
- We do not use directory information for advertising or any non-educational purpose.
Service agreement posture
For schools and districts that need a formal data-handling document, we offer a draft service agreement intended to:
- Name the school or district as the data controller and Boomerang Projects as the school-official processor.
- Limit our processing to the minimum data set described above and prohibit use for any non-educational purpose.
- Commit to deleting class data within 30 days of class archival or contract termination.
- Provide a security contact and a breach-notification process.
The draft is a starting point; districts should have their counsel review it and mark it up. We are open to redlines.

Data export & deletion
- Teachers can export the roster, gradebook, and student work as CSV from the dashboard at any time.
- Archiving a class hides it from active views but keeps the data for the academic year.
- Deleting a class removes all related student submissions, feedback, and rubric scores from the live database. Deletion is irreversible.
- Students can ask their teacher to remove them from the roster; all of that student's submissions and feedback delete with the roster entry.
